This work explores the experience of moving to another country. The unnerving sensation of being incomplete. The realisation that a lot of what defines who you are, is actually not you at all, but it was rather the surroundings that you have left behind.

This painting is a snap shot in this process of loss and rediscovery that happens when you immigrate.

Personally, it is my own story when I first landed in the city of Rouen France, having come from a remote region in Northern Australia.

This work depicts the city of Rouen. You can see three major landmarks of this medieval city - the ‘Gros Horloge’ (the Great Clock), the Cathedral Notre Dame de Rouen, and the ‘Tour Jeanne D’Arc’ (Joan of Arc’s Tower). Also a pathwork of the half-timbered houses which are the typical architecture of this city and of the region of Normandy.

The French word for foreigner is “Etranger” …

This literally translates to “Stranger”
